How To Propose
The complete guide for the perfect wedding proposal
With engagement season in full swing, some of you might have been thinking about popping the question for some time. For most of you, this will be the first time and don’t know where to start. After years helping people plan the perfect proposal I know that there is no fixed rule on how to propose and one size does not fit all. If you are planning a destination proposal or want something out of the ordinary, then I strongly suggest you hire a professional planner. However, if you are planning something simple and do not need a planner to advise you and organize all the moving parts, here are some simple steps on how to propose to help you plan the perfect proposal. Remember, when deciding how to propose make sure you think about what your other half wants as well as what you want. Consider your personalities, your likes and dislikes. Make this moment memorable and romantic in your own special way. And of course, If you are planning a marriage proposal in Italy or in London and are looking for professional help, tips and ideas on how to propose I am always here!
1. Ensure that she/he is the one
On this point you are on your own, I am afraid. You can discuss it with someone close to you but in the end only you know the answer. Knowing the other person well, having dated for a certain amount of time, having lived together, knowing you want similar things in life are all valid points. But logic has often little to do with love and relationships. The important thing is that you truly love the other person and that you see yourself spending the rest of your life together. There is no fixed rule as to what makes a marriage work but you should always start with the right intentions and you should not propose because you feel this is what is expected of you.
FOREVER IS NOT THAT LONG IF IT’S TRUE LOVE
2. Decide when to propose
When deciding how to propose timing is of the essence. It could be a meaningful date for both of you or during a holiday season. Try to choose a time when you will feel relaxed and ready. Give yourself enough time to plan your proposal in detail without being rushed and choose a time where your work and everyday life schedule is less demanding. The most popular time to get engaged is between Christmas and Valentine’s day. However, the type of proposal you are planning will also dictate the time. If for example you are planning to propose on a beach, end of spring or summer at sunset is the perfect time. You might also want to consider the time of year he/she wants to get married and how long he/she wants to be engaged to give you enough time to plan the wedding.

3. Decide where to propose
You will both remember this moment forever. The right backdrop will help you create the right atmosphere for the perfect proposal. You might want to think about places that she/he loves. A romantic place such as a beach, a city bridge, a park, a panoramic terrace, etc. Sometimes how you propose also dictates the place where you will propose. For example, a common interest or something you like to do together such as travelling, hiking, cycling, sailing or even skydiving! You can propose anywhere, but a destination proposal is always extra special because it will be a romantic escape for the two of you.

4. Decide how to propose
Now that you have chosen the where and when, you need to think in detail about how to propose and plan it carefully. Are you going to drop on one knee or are you going to hide the ring? Do you want to pop the question in private or in public? Is your proposal going to be traditional or are you planning for something extravagant? Are you planning to have music in the background or a secret photographer? Although you should try to make this moment memorable and show that you have made an effort, the important thing is that whatever you are planning comes natural to you. No matter how simple or complex your proposal is going to be, it should reflect who you are as a couple. Here are a few fun ideas:
ENLIST THE HELP OF A FRIEND
HIDE THE RING
SPELL IT OUT
ORGANIZE A RING TREASURE HUNT
5. Find the perfect ring
If you know what kind of ring your other half wants then shop around for one that fits the bill and that you can afford. But if you have no idea, don’t try to ask casually. It will give you away instantly. If you think you can trust her/his best friend/mother/sister you can ask them in confidence if they can help you in your search. Otherwise, think about what your lover’s style and taste is. Would they prefer a simple design or something more flamboyant? Trends change every year, but the most popular engagement ring styles are solitaire, halo, cluster and three stone.

6. Get ready
Run through the final plans and make sure everything is in place. Write down a proposal and rehearse it. Think about all the reasons why you love the other person and want to spend the rest of your life together, the small things and the big ones. Use your own words. It does not have to be long but it needs to come from your heart. Rehearsing your speech will help you feel more relaxed when you finally ask. Dress for the occasion and the place and make sure she/he does the same where possible. This is particularly important if you are planning to have an engagement photo shoot afterwards!
